Along the North Santiam Highway in the Willamette National Forest, winter settles on a shallow pond

I shot this picture alongside Highway 22, the North Santiam Highway, near Idanha, Oregon in the Willamette National Forest. Grasses in the pond have turned brown for the winter, and I was lucky to pass by when the surrounding trees had a heavy wet coat of fresh snow and the pond was only partly frozen.

Highway 22 is a major route from Salem and the Willamette Valley to Central Oregon and the towns of Sisters, Bend, Redmond and Prineville. This well-maintained highway is one of the pleasantest drives in Oregon. Highlights of the drive include Detroit Reservoir and glimpses of Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, and Three-fingered Jack. The road also passes through a pretty recent lava flow.
