The Clackamas River in the Mt. Hood National Forest is very popular with Kayakers. The single most popular spot is Bob's Hole, above Estacada, where play boaters hone their skills at blunts and cartwheels. In mild weather from October to June the roadside can be lined with the cars of Kayakers.

On the day I shot this photo, I pretty much had the canyon to myself. The temperature was in the zero degree area, which is considered very cold in western Oregon. Water dripping down the cliff across the road from the river was freezing at the same time that a bitter downriver wind was pushing droplets sideways. The resulting huge icicles formed baroque and distorted patterns.
