When bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) leaves turn to fall color on the tree, they usually change from green to yellow, and often become streaked with a little light brown. But very shortly after they hit the ground (from within hours to a day or two), they turn solid brown, ranging from the light brown of the left hand leaf to the dark brown of the leaf on the right.
Why are they called bigleaf maples? A large leaf, like the one on the right, can be up to the size of a dinner plate.
