Meltwater-etched icicles hang from a cliff on the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge.

It's one thing to hike the rather exposed Eagle Creek Trail No. 440 in good weather, but it is even more exciting in severe winter weather. Lucky for me that I found these icicles only about 200 yards up the trail from the parking area. Seriously, the trail was covered with ice on this day in the mid 1990's, and, since I didn't have crampons, I took a few shots and headed back to the car.

These icicles were one to two inches in diameter and up to a couple of feet long. The weather was just beginning to warm after a hard, long cold spell and meltwater was etching interesting patterns in the surface of the ice.
