Western skunk cabbage (Lysichitum americanum) can be seen in low elevation marshes all over the Pacific Northwest west of the Cascades. The skunk cabbage in this picture are growing in a marsh just a few feet above sea level and a few hundred yards from the ocean.
Skunk cabbage brings early color to Oregon and Washington woods. On the west side of the Coast Range it begins to bloom as early as late January.
