One of the few aspen groves in northwest Oregon, photographed on the east slopes of Mt Hood..
Aspens are scarce around Mt. Hood. There are a few groves here and there, for those who take the time to look. This grove is located near Oregon Highway 35 along the upper East Fork of the Hood River, in a wetland named Horsethief Meadows near (the former) Robinhood Campground and Sherwood Campground. If you want to stand among them, you'll have to do some exploring and a little cross-country hiking. I first spotted them from high on the west ridge of Lookout Mountain.

This meadow also contains some absolutely huge Black Cottonwoods. There are taller Cottonwoods in the Willamette Valley, but the ones at Horsethief Meadows are massive in girth. Could there be a world record tree here?
