A mature Garry Oak (Quercus garryana) standing beside the trail at Catherine Creek in the Columbia River Gorge, a popular spring wildflower hike destination.
This picture shows a Garry Oak tree (Quercus garryana) that grows in the woodlands in the bottom of the Catherine Creek Canyon, Washington. Most Garry Oaks (also known as Oregon Oaks) growing east of the Cascades are severely stunted and deformed. Because it is growing in a relatively sheltered spot, this one has attained a respectable size and shape.

Catherine Creek is a well-known hiking and wildflower viewing area, open to the public, in the eastern Columbia River Gorge. Catherine Creek is almost across the river from Mosier, Oregon, halfway between Hood River and The Dalles.
