This picture was taken on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island near Qualicum Beach, looking across the Strait of Georgia. While vacationing here a few years ago, we were treated to a series of spectacular sunrises. The only filtration used on this photo was a graduated neutral density filter. The shot was made on Fuji Velvia film, which tends to saturate reds. No further enhancement was done.
I placed the sun off center deliberately. If it was exactly centered, the photograph would appear static. Off-center, the photo is more dynamic, but I wish that I hadn't pushed it quite so far to the left.
One of these days I am going to do a higher resolution scan and crop away about a third of the right side of the image and most of the dark cloud from the top. The position of the sun will appear more balanced and and less distracting. Here is a better-composed but wider angle picture of the same sunrise.
