This picture was taken on the Pacific Crest Trail between McKenzie Pass and Belknap Crater, a shield volcano on the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The peak is Black Crater, a 7251 foot high partially glaciated shield volcano located a just east of the summit of the Cascades near Sisters, Oregon.
I timed this hike to coincide with a full moon. There is software available that will give the precise time of moonrise for your location as well as the compass direction to the spot on the horizon where the moon will rise.
