The Moon Rises over Black Butte in Central Oregon near Sisters, OR

This picture was taken on the Pacific Crest Trail between McKenzie Pass and Belknap Crater, a shield volcano on the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The peak is Black Butte, a 6436 foot high unglaciated stratovolcano located a few miles east of the summit of the Cascades near Sisters, Oregon.

I timed this hike to coincide with a full moon. There is software available that will give the precise time of moonrise for your location as well as the compass direction to the spot on the horizon where the moon will rise. I use Moonrise, a program written by Dr. Bruce Sidell.
