Pre-visualization

Pre-visualization is the concept of originating and developing an idea for a photograph before going into the field and taking the photograph. I first encountered the concept of pre-visualization in the writing of Galen Rowell. Rowell was a regular contributor to Outdoor Photographer and the author of several excellent books.

At first, the concept seemed strange. I'm used to going out into the world hoping to stumble across photo ops. How would a landscape photographer visualize a photo of a scene that he/she hasn't seen? But after reading Rowell over a period of time and assimilating a many of his ideas, this, too, began to make sense.

Pre-visualizing helps me "find" specific photos in the field. Going to work with an idea in mind keeps me focused on looking for the opportunity that I need to find.
