The color choices in this kitchen appear deceptively simple, but consider for a moment how the chrome cabinet hardware is a perfect complement for the stark white cabinets. That, in turn, helps integrate the stainless steel of the modern appliances, including the double drawer Kitchenaid dishwasher.

The travertine tile backsplash and the end-grain douglas fir floor provide a strong sense of warmth to the setting. The countertop is covered in natural dark charcoal colored soapstone tiles, and economical way to create a stone countertop. Soapstone is much softer than granite, and therefore easier to work with.

Note the vintage style lamp over the sink. It strikes an authentic note, although it is a modern reproduction of a period light fixture. Portland is home to two leading sources of authentic lighting copies, Rejuvenation and Schoolhouse Electric. The additional recessed can lighting in the ceiling provides a modern level of illumination.

The window above the sink is a modern casement window unit. The center unit is a picture window, while the flanking units are operable crank-out Marvin casements. The horizontal bar midway up the glass is an applied simulated divided light (or SDL) bar that simulates the meeting rails in the original double hung windows used in older parts of the house.
