Board Foot: A measurement standard used in logging and lumber sales. A board foot of wood is the equivalent volume of 12" x 12" x 1". See 'Lineal Foot'.

End Grain:

Farmhouse Sink: A kitchen sink with a porcelain apron that projects through and below the countertop.

Flat Grain:

Hearth: A fireproof masonry area in front of a fireplace.

Lineal Foot: A measurement standard used in retail lumber sales to describe a one-foot length of any size board. For example, a 2 x 4 five feet long is five 'lineal' feet of 2 x 4. A variant is 'linear foot'.

Quarter-sawn:

Rail: A horizontal framing member in a door, window sash, or cabinet face. Also see "stile."

Rift Grain:

Sash: In an operable window, the pane(s) of glass and any framework bonded to and moving with that glass; also, its equivalent in a fixed window.

Stile: A vertical framing member in a door, window sash, or cabinet face. Also see "rail."

Vertical Grain:
