A formation of columnar basalt caps a hillside covered with balsamroot on Dalles Mountain Road, a popular wildflower viewing location in the Columbia River Gorge.
This photo shows a columnar basalt formation above Dalles Mountain Road about a mile in from Washington Highway 14. From this angle this formation resembles a mesa in the desert southwest. The predominant wildflower in the foreground is balsamroot, which grows along this road in profusion in mid-April.
