A Collapsing Anvil Cloud Over a Balsamroot-Covered Hillside, Columbia Hills State Park, WA.
A field of balsamroot blooms under a collapsing anvil cloud on Dalles Mountain Road, a popular wildflower viewing location in the Columbia River Gorge.
This photo was taken on Dalles Mountain Road in the middle of Columbia Hills State Park. Earlier, I had been on the slopes in the upper part of Dalles Mountain Ranch watching an anvil cloud build over Oregon. Conditions weren't right for a thunderstorm, and the anvil cloud started to collapse. I drove down the hill to Dalles Mountain Road and headed for a spot that has a vista of of the Columbia River and The Dalles, with a vast field of Balsamroot in the foreground, where I took this picture.
