Columbia Desert Parsley Begins to Bloom Against a Shady Basalt Background.
The wildflower Columbia desert parsley blooms against a basalt background at Catherine Creek, Washington.
When Columbia Desert Parsley (Lomatium columbianum) first appears in early March, small flower heads appear above a modest amount of foliage. A week later, the foliage will overtake and submerge the flower heads. By mid-March, only a large mound of lacy green foliage will be visible. By late March, the flowerheads reappear above the foliage.

Columbia Desert Parsley is common at low elevations in the eastern Columbia River Gorge. The best places to see this plant are between Bingen and Dallesport on the Washington side and between Mosier and The Dalles on the Oregon side.

This photo was taken between Rowland Lake and Catherine Creek on Old Highway 8 just north of Highway 14.
