Shafts of sunlight filtered by the Garry Oaks and Ponderosa Pines that make up the woodlands in the Catherine Creek canyon shine on drifts of lupine in full bloom. Lupine thrive in both full sun and filtered sun.

The canyon trail is the direction most hikers go after leaving the parking lot at Catherine Creek. It leads into a sheltered woodland that passes by an old corral and the remnants of a small barn. As you pass by the corral look uphill to the right to see a natural and large basalt arch.

There is a lot of brush and poison oak in this area. Staying on the trail and away from the brush will minimize your chances of picking up a tick. Rattlesnakes have been seen around the edge of the talus slope below the arch.
