Several species of Grass Iris are native to the Pacific Northwest. Grass Iris grow only about a foot to 18 inches high. Color varies from pale lavenders to deep purple.
The best display that I know of occurs in May in the Bandon to Brookings area. The drive out to Cape Blanco is perhaps the best place to see masses in bloom.
This picture was taken looking north from Cape Blanco. Cape Blanco is the westernmost point in the contiguous 48 states. Because it extends so far into the Pacific Ocean, Cape Blanco is an extremely windy location.
Cape Blanco is the location of an Oregon State Park with a large and quiet overnight campground. It is also the location of a former Coast Guard light house which is now privately operated and which is open for public tours 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM except Mondays.
