Ragged Point Viewed from High on Highway 1, Big Sur Coast, California

This photo was taken from the last cliffside stretch of Highway One about 14 miles north of the town of San Simeon and 12 miles from the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument (Hearst Castle). From the roadside turnout where this picture was taken it is about 4 miles south to the Piedras Blancas light house and 5 miles to the Piedras Blancas elephant seal viewpoint. This picture shows a portion of Ragged Point extending out into the Pacific. To the right of the edge of the photo, Ragged Point earns its name by diminishing into a string of partially submerged rocks disappearing into the ocean. In the distance at the top of the frame is Point Sierra Nevada.
