Pilings like thesse are all that remain of most salmon canneries in Astoria, Oregon. A century ago, almost the entire waterfront was occupied by fish canneries and support businesses built on pilings in the edge of the Columbia River Estuary. Dams, overfishing, and massive habitat loss destroyed the fishery, and almost destroyed Astoria in the bargain. Astoria is making a comeback as an artist's and craftsperson's mecca.
