Spray Blows Off a Breaking "White Horse" Wave at Yaquina Head on the Oregon Coast
On the afternoon when I shot this photo at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area near Newport, Oregon, the waves rolling in off the Pacific Ocean were running 15 to 20 feet high, and the east wind was blowing offshore directly into the face of the waves at 20 to 30 miles an hour.  The result was that, as soon as a waves began to crest, the top of the wave would be blown backwards by the wind.  I love the way I caught the very beginning of the break crashing down.

Waves here roll in on a wide beach that is a popular surfing location.  The best place to shoot the waves is at the old quarry just past the entrance booth.

This BLM recreation site has an interpretive center, a lighthouse that is usually open to the public, tidepools, bird colonies, and a harbor seal colony.

The nearby town of Newport has a working waterfront, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and one of the most beautiful bridges you'll ever see.
