This meadow of penstemons and silvered snags is located below the parking lot at Cloud Cap Chalet just below timberline on the north slope of Mt. Hood.
I started out from Portland at 2 or 3 AM on an August morning in order to arrive at Cloud Cap in time to shoot the sunrise. The sunrise was unimpressive, but the meadows around Cloud Cap were full of fine-toothed penstemons at the peak of bloom.
I wish I had shot more film of the penstemons that day, because I have learned since then that it's not so easy duplicate ideal conditions like I found that day in a subsequent summer.
