This picture was taken on a fall morning from Surveyor Ridge looking toward the west at Mt. Hood. The golden colored foliage is Western Larch (also known as Tamarack). In northwestern Oregon, Western Larch is found in large stands on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains.
Larch is a deciduous coniferous tree. In the fall, the beautiful bright green foliage of spring and summer turns yellow, then butterscotch, and then drops, all in about two weeks. In the spring, a new set of needles appear.
