In this Portland, Oregon living room, Westlake Homes used reasonably priced 12" x 12" slate tiles to create the look of a masonry wall around the fireplace. The irregular split faces of the slate tiles add an interesting texture to the wall.
American cherry cabinets and and a cherry mantel add warmth to the room. The recessed lights in the ceiling highlight this living room's most important features. Note how the cabinet drawers are noticably lighter than the rest of the wood. Tell your cabinetmaker that you want all the wood color matched.
The hearth on this fireplace is only 12" wide. I think it would look more graceful if it were lower and wider.
This room has 12 foot high ceilings. The multiple piece crown moulding at the ceiling is almost a foot wide. The 8 foot tall french door onto the deck still leaves room above for a very generous transom, making this a very light and bright room.
